The VPN market is a noise machine. Every provider claims to be the fastest, the most secure, the best for streaming. Most of those claims are marketing copy written by people who've never run a speed test in their lives. So we did what the review sites usually don't: we actually tested 12 VPNs across multiple servers, streaming platforms, and security metrics over a six-week period in early 2026.
The result? NordVPN earned the top spot — not because it dominated every single category, but because it delivered the best overall combination of speed, security, streaming access, and value. Here's the full breakdown, with real numbers.
Testing Methodology
We tested each VPN on a 500 Mbps fiber connection from Madison, Wisconsin, connecting to servers in five locations: New York, Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, and Sydney. Each speed test was run three times per server at different times of day (morning, afternoon, evening) to account for load variation. We measured download speed, upload speed, and latency. All tests used the provider's recommended protocol — in most cases, WireGuard or its proprietary variant.
For streaming, we tested access to Netflix US, Netflix UK, Netflix Japan, Hulu, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video from each server location. For security, we checked for DNS leaks, WebRTC leaks, and IPv6 leaks using standard testing tools, and reviewed each provider's audit history, logging policy, and jurisdiction.
The VPNs tested: NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), CyberGhost, IPVanish, Mullvad, Windscribe, TunnelBear, Atlas VPN, and Mozilla VPN.
Speed Test Results: NordVPN's NordLynx Protocol Delivers
NordVPN averaged 442 Mbps on domestic (US) servers — 88.4% of our baseline 500 Mbps connection. That's exceptional. The NordLynx protocol (NordVPN's proprietary implementation built on WireGuard) is demonstrably faster than standard WireGuard implementations on other providers, likely due to their double-NAT optimization that eliminates the WireGuard logging concern while maintaining speed.
On international servers, NordVPN maintained 380 Mbps to London (76% of baseline), 310 Mbps to Tokyo (62%), and 275 Mbps to Sydney (55%). These are strong numbers. The Tokyo and Sydney connections are the real test — high-latency, long-haul connections expose protocol inefficiencies that domestic connections mask.
Surfshark came in second overall with 415 Mbps domestic average (83%). Surfshark's WireGuard implementation is excellent, and at a lower price point than NordVPN, it's the value pick. The speed gap between NordVPN and Surfshark is noticeable in real-world use only for bandwidth-intensive activities like 4K streaming to multiple devices simultaneously.
Proton VPN averaged 395 Mbps domestic (79%) and offered the best speeds among the privacy-first VPNs. Proton's Swiss jurisdiction, open-source applications, and zero-log policy make it the top choice for users who prioritize privacy over everything else. The speed trade-off versus NordVPN is minimal.
ExpressVPN averaged 385 Mbps domestic (77%). Still fast, but no longer the speed leader it once was. ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol is solid but hasn't kept pace with NordLynx in our testing. At ExpressVPN's higher price point, the speed gap is hard to justify unless you specifically need their router firmware or a feature unique to their platform.
PIA delivered 370 Mbps domestic (74%) — respectable for a budget option. PIA's WireGuard implementation is competent, and their massive server network (35,000+ servers across 91 countries) means you'll almost always find a nearby server with low load. PIA also stands out for its proven no-logs policy, which has been tested in court multiple times.
Streaming Performance: Who Actually Unblocks Netflix?
Streaming access is the single most common reason people buy VPNs, and it's the category where providers differ most dramatically. Netflix has become increasingly aggressive about blocking VPN connections, and only a few providers have the infrastructure to consistently stay ahead.
NordVPN: Unblocked Netflix in all three regions tested (US, UK, Japan). Also worked flawlessly with Hulu, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video. NordVPN's dedicated streaming-optimized servers and their SmartPlay DNS technology make this the most reliable streaming VPN we tested. Zero failures across six weeks of testing.
Surfshark: Unblocked Netflix US and UK but had intermittent issues with Netflix Japan (worked roughly 80% of the time). Full access to Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime. BBC iPlayer worked on dedicated UK streaming servers but not standard UK servers.
ExpressVPN: Unblocked all Netflix regions and all streaming platforms tested. ExpressVPN's MediaStreamer feature provides an additional DNS-based approach for devices that don't support VPN apps (smart TVs, gaming consoles). On pure streaming reliability, ExpressVPN ties with NordVPN.
Proton VPN: Streaming access is available only on paid plans (not the free tier). Netflix US worked consistently, but UK and Japan access was spotty. Disney+ and Hulu worked. BBC iPlayer was blocked during most test sessions. If streaming is your primary use case, Proton isn't the optimal choice.
PIA: Netflix US worked intermittently — roughly 70% success rate. Other streaming platforms were hit or miss. PIA's strength is privacy and price, not streaming access.
Security and Privacy: The Non-Negotiables
Every VPN on this list passed our DNS leak and WebRTC leak tests with their kill switch enabled. The differentiation in security comes from logging policies, audit history, and jurisdiction.
NordVPN has completed four independent audits by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte confirming their no-logs policy. They're incorporated in Panama — outside the 14 Eyes surveillance alliance. Their Threat Protection feature blocks malware, trackers, and malicious ads at the VPN level, functioning as a lightweight security suite on top of the VPN connection. The Dark Web Monitor feature scans for your credentials in data breach databases and alerts you if your email or passwords appear in leaked datasets.
Proton VPN leads on transparency. Their applications are fully open-source (independently audited on GitHub), and their Swiss jurisdiction provides some of the strongest privacy protections in the world. Proton's Secure Core feature routes traffic through hardened servers in Switzerland, Iceland, or Sweden before exiting to the destination — providing an additional layer of protection against server-level surveillance.
Mullvad deserves mention for pure privacy, despite not ranking in our top tier overall. Mullvad doesn't even require an email address to create an account — you get a randomly generated account number. No name, no email, no personal information of any kind. If you want maximum anonymity, Mullvad is unmatched. The trade-off: limited streaming support and fewer servers than the major providers.
Pricing Breakdown
NordVPN: $3.39/month on the 2-year Standard plan, $4.39/month for Plus (includes Threat Protection and password manager), $5.39/month for Ultimate (adds cyber insurance and cloud storage). The 2-year plan represents the best value — the monthly plan at $12.99 is not competitive.
Surfshark: $2.19/month on the 2-year plan — the cheapest premium VPN available. Unlimited simultaneous connections (most providers cap at 5-10) make it the best option for large households.
Proton VPN: $4.49/month on the 2-year plan, or free with significant speed and server limitations. The free tier is genuinely usable — no data caps, no ads — but it's limited to servers in the US, Netherlands, and Japan with slower speeds.
ExpressVPN: $6.67/month on the annual plan. The most expensive option tested and, in our view, no longer justified by a meaningful performance advantage over NordVPN at nearly half the price.
🔒 Protect Your Digital Life: NordVPN
NordVPN earned our #1 ranking for the best combination of speed, streaming access, security, and value. Their NordLynx protocol delivers near-baseline speeds, and four independent audits confirm their no-logs policy.
The Verdict
Best Overall: NordVPN. Fastest speeds, perfect streaming reliability, audited security, competitive pricing. It's the VPN we use daily and recommend without reservation.
Best Budget: Surfshark. 90% of NordVPN's performance at 65% of the price, with unlimited device connections. If you're on a tight budget or have a large household, Surfshark is the smart play.
Best for Privacy: Proton VPN. Open-source, Swiss jurisdiction, Secure Core routing. If your threat model extends beyond Netflix access to genuine privacy concerns, Proton is the answer.
Skip: Atlas VPN (limited server network, unproven security track record), TunnelBear (cute branding, mediocre performance), and Mozilla VPN (too few features for the price). These aren't bad products — they're just outclassed by the top tier.
