Same Prompt, Four Generators, Wildly Different Results
I gave all four major AI image generators the same 20 prompts ranging from photorealistic portraits to abstract concepts to product mockups. Here''s which one actually produces images worth using.
The Rankings
- Midjourney V6.1 ($10-30/mo) — Still the King
Aesthetic quality is unmatched. Midjourney images look like they were shot by a professional photographer or painted by a concept artist. The new V6.1 update added better text rendering (finally) and more photorealistic skin tones. Best for: marketing materials, social media content, artistic projects. - Flux Pro ($0.04/image via API) — The New Challenger
Black Forest Labs'' Flux is the most photorealistic generator available. It handles hands correctly (!!), produces natural lighting, and text rendering is the best in the industry. Best for: product mockups, architectural visualization, photorealistic content. - DALL-E 3 (Included with ChatGPT Plus) — Most Convenient
Built into ChatGPT, so you can iterate with natural language. Quality is good but not Midjourney-level. The convenience factor is massive — "make it more blue" is easier than crafting Midjourney prompts. Best for: quick iterations, concept exploration, non-designers. - Stable Diffusion 3.5 (Free/Open Source) — Best for Control
Run it locally, modify it freely, train on your own data. Quality is close to Flux for technical users. ControlNet and IP-Adapter give unprecedented control over composition. Best for: developers, privacy-focused users, custom model training.
Quick Decision Guide
Need beautiful images fast? → Midjourney. Need photorealistic mockups? → Flux. Need quick iterations inside ChatGPT? → DALL-E 3. Need full control and privacy? → Stable Diffusion.
