The Experiment
We ran 50 A/B tests across Facebook, Google, and LinkedIn ads. In each test, a professional copywriter wrote version A, and AI (using Jasper and Claude) generated version B. Same targeting, same budget, same creative — only the copy changed. Here's what happened.
The Results
| Metric | Human Copy | AI Copy | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Click-Through Rate | 2.3% avg | 2.8% avg | AI (+22%) |
| Conversion Rate | 3.1% avg | 2.9% avg | Human (+7%) |
| Cost Per Click | $1.42 avg | $1.18 avg | AI (-17%) |
| ROAS | 3.2x avg | 3.4x avg | AI (+6%) |
| Time to Produce | 2-4 hours | 5-15 minutes | AI (95% faster) |
Where AI Won
Headlines and hooks: AI consistently produced more attention-grabbing headlines. It tested patterns from millions of successful ads and applied proven formulas (curiosity gaps, specific numbers, emotional triggers) more reliably than humans.
Variation testing: The biggest advantage wasn't individual copy quality — it was volume. AI generated 20-30 variations in the time a human produced 3-4. More variations means faster discovery of winning messages. The winning AI copy was often the 15th or 20th variation — a number humans simply don't produce.
Data-driven optimization: AI tools like Jasper's "Improve" feature analyzed performance data and iteratively improved copy based on what was working. The copy evolved mid-campaign.
Where Humans Won
Conversion copy: On landing pages and in longer sales copy, human writers still edged out AI. The difference: humans better understood buyer psychology, addressed specific objections, and crafted narratives that built trust. AI was great at getting the click; humans were better at closing the sale.
Brand voice consistency: For established brands with distinctive voices, human writers maintained tone more reliably. AI occasionally drifted into generic "marketing speak" that didn't match the brand personality.
Emotional resonance: The ads that performed best overall were human-written stories — personal anecdotes, customer testimonials, founder origin stories. AI can generate stories, but they lack the authentic specificity that creates genuine emotional connection.
The Optimal Approach
The data supports a clear strategy: use AI for quantity and humans for quality. AI generates 20+ variations for headlines, hooks, and short-form copy. Humans review, edit, and write the conversion-critical copy (landing pages, email sequences, long-form sales pages). This hybrid approach produced the best overall results in our testing — higher CTR than human-only AND higher conversion rates than AI-only.
