The Test
We filed three identical tax returns — a W-2 employee with investments, a freelancer with business deductions, and a homeowner with rental income — on TurboTax, H&R Block, and FreeTaxUSA. Each platform now features AI assistants. Here's how they compared.
TurboTax AI ($89-169)
TurboTax's "Intuit Assist" AI is the most polished. It proactively identifies deductions you might miss, explains tax concepts in plain English, and walks you through complex situations with conversational guidance. The AI scanned our W-2 photos instantly and auto-populated forms with 99% accuracy.
Strengths: Best AI guidance, most comprehensive interview process, excellent photo scanning. The "Expert Review" AI catches errors before filing and explains the impact of each line item.
Weaknesses: Most expensive option. Constant upselling to higher tiers. Some AI features locked behind premium plans.
Best for: Complex returns, first-time filers who need hand-holding, anyone with rental income or investments.
H&R Block AI ($55-110)
H&R Block's AI assistant is solid but less conversational than TurboTax. It answers questions accurately, identifies common deductions, and provides clear explanations. The standout feature: if the AI can't handle your question, it seamlessly connects you to a human tax professional (included in some tiers).
Strengths: Good balance of AI + human support. Competitive pricing. The "Tax Pro Review" tier gets a CPA to review your AI-prepared return. Physical offices for in-person support.
Weaknesses: AI feels less advanced than TurboTax. Interface is clunkier. Photo scanning less reliable.
Best for: Mid-complexity returns, people who want AI help but human backup available.
FreeTaxUSA ($0-15)
The budget option that punches above its weight. FreeTaxUSA added an AI assistant in 2025, and while it's simpler than the premium competitors, it handles common tax situations competently. Federal filing is free, state is $15. The AI helps with deduction identification and form navigation.
Strengths: Essentially free. AI covers the basics well. Clean, no-nonsense interface without constant upselling.
Weaknesses: AI is basic compared to TurboTax. No photo scanning. Limited guidance for complex situations. No human expert access.
Best for: Simple to moderate returns, budget-conscious filers, W-2 employees without complex deductions.
Accuracy Comparison
All three platforms calculated identical federal tax owed for the W-2 employee. For the freelancer, TurboTax found $340 more in deductions than H&R Block and $520 more than FreeTaxUSA — the AI's proactive deduction hunting made a measurable difference. For the rental property owner, TurboTax and H&R Block matched; FreeTaxUSA required more manual input but reached the same result.
The Verdict
Simple return? FreeTaxUSA. Complex return where $200-500 in extra deductions matters? TurboTax pays for itself. Want AI help with human backup? H&R Block. The AI tax revolution is real — just don't overpay for features you don't need.
