In 2024, a deepfake video call impersonating a CFO convinced a finance worker to transfer $25 million. In 2025, deepfake celebrity endorsements scammed thousands of consumers. In 2026, AI-generated video is so convincing that even experts struggle to distinguish it from real footage. We have officially entered the post-truth era for visual media.
How Deepfakes Are Made
Modern deepfakes use diffusion models and GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks) to generate or manipulate video. The process: train an AI model on hours of target footage (or even minutes, with newer models), then generate new video with the person saying or doing anything. Voice cloning adds matching audio. The result: a video that looks and sounds exactly like a real person, saying things they never said.
How to Spot Them (For Now)
Temporal inconsistencies: Watch for micro-glitches between frames — slight jumps in hair, jewelry, or background. Real video has consistent physics; deepfakes occasionally don't.
Eye contact and blinking: Early deepfakes had unnatural blinking patterns. Newer ones are better, but eye movement during conversation can still feel "off."
Audio-visual sync: Listen carefully for lip sync mismatches, especially on consonant sounds (P, B, M, T, D). These require specific mouth shapes that deepfakes sometimes approximate rather than replicate.
Context clues: Ask yourself: is this too good/bad/dramatic to be true? Does the source have a motive for fabrication? Can you find the original through reverse video search?

The Bigger Problem
Detection tools are in an arms race with generation tools — and generation is winning. The real solution isn't better detection; it's better verification. Content provenance standards (C2PA), digital signatures for authentic media, and institutional trust frameworks matter more than any detection algorithm.
