The Promise vs Reality
Every crypto bot claims 200%+ annual returns. Most are glorified DCA tools or outright scams. We deposited $500 into each of 7 popular bots and tracked performance for 60 days during a mixed BTC market ($78K-$92K range).
The Results (60-Day Returns)
1. 3Commas DCA Bot: +8.2% — The winner. Grid and DCA strategies on BTC/ETH pairs. The AI optimizes entry points based on volatility. Simple, effective, not flashy. $29/month.
2. Pionex Grid Bot: +5.1% — Free built-in bots on the exchange. Grid trading works in ranging markets (which is most of crypto). The AI auto-sets grid parameters. Free (exchange fees only).
3. Bitsgap: +1.3% — Barely profitable after fees. The trailing feature is nice but the AI isn't meaningfully better than manual settings. $29/month.
4. Cryptohopper: -2.4% — Strategy marketplace is overwhelming. Most community strategies are overfitted to backtests. Requires significant manual tuning. $24/month.
5. Shrimpy: -4.1% — Portfolio rebalancing bot. Works in bull markets, bleeds in choppy markets. Not truly "AI" — just automated rebalancing. $15/month.
6. WunderTrading: -6.8% — Copy-trading feature connected us to a "top trader" who proceeded to revenge-trade after a loss. Human risk + bot leverage = disaster. $19/month.
7. Random "AI" bot from Twitter ad: -41% — Scam. Deposited to their platform, bot made increasingly large trades, "technical issues" prevented withdrawal. Reported to FBI IC3.

The Honest Truth
AI crypto bots work best in ranging, volatile markets (grid bots) and as DCA optimizers. They don't beat buy-and-hold BTC in strong bull markets. Use them as a supplement to your strategy, not a replacement for it. And never — ever — deposit money into a bot you found from a social media ad.
